Limestone Township Library District helps you with the Annular Eclipse

Limestone Township Library District helps you with the Annular Eclipse

On Saturday, October 14, there will be an Annular Eclipse of the sun. Unlike a total eclipse, we will be able to see the corona – the outer ring of light – of the sun. This is also known as the ring of fire.

Our area of Illinois will only see 40 - 45% of the eclipse. Starting at 10:37 A.M. CDT, the eclipse will start and the sun will look as if someone has taken a small bite out of it. The peak time will be at 11:52 A.M. with a bigger bite. The eclipse will finish in our region around 1:23 P.M. according to the Adler Planetarium website.

If you plan to watch the annular eclipse, you need to take a few precautions. According to the American Astronomical Society (AAS), one should never look directly at the sun as it may cause damage to your eyes. They suggest that people use solar eclipse glasses to protect their eyes. Make sure the lenses are not scratched before using. Look away from the sun before putting on the glasses, or removing them. For those who wear glasses, make sure to put the solar eclipse glasses over your own. Hold them to the side of your head to ensure they do not slip.

If you need a pair of Solar Shades, you can stop in at the Limestone Township Library District to pick one up. Thanks to a grant from the Adler Planetarium, we were given many pairs to give out to the public. Stop in at the library to pick up some protective solar eyewear on our Astronomy display and find a few books about the solar system.

Banned Books Week at Limestone Township Library District

As we observe Banned Books Week on Sunday, October 1 through Saturday, October 7, Limestone Township Library District will display books that have been banned or challenged according to reports made to the American Library Association (ALA).

In 2022, ALA documented 1,269 demands to censor library books and resources – the highest number of attempted book bans since ALA began compiling data about censorship in libraries more than 20 years ago. Most targeted books were by or about Black or LGBTQIA+ persons.

Because many book challenges are not reported to the ALA or covered by the press, the Top Most Challenged Books lists and 2022 data compiled by ALA represent only a snapshot of book challenges.

This year, beloved reading advocate, writer, and television and film star LeVar Burton will serve as this year’s Banned Books Week Honorary Chair.

“Books bring us together. They teach us about the world and each other. The ability to read and access books is a fundamental right and a necessity for life-long success,” said the star of PBS children’s series Reading Rainbow and LeVar Burton Reads podcast.

For more information, call the library at 815-939-1696.

September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month

September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month

To celebrate National Library Card Sign-Up Month, Limestone Township Library District held a basket contest in which people had to guess how many cards we had given out in the past fiscal year. For the first two weeks of the month, several people guessed at how many new library cards we gave out.

Chris Tighe, of Limestone Township, was the winner of our basket that included a Lucky canvas tote courtesy of the Friends of the Library. Chris guessed 130 cards had been given out which was the closest guess to the actual number of 149 cards given.

Help us break that record by getting your Limestone Township Library District card today. The process for getting a card is simple. Stop in with your Driver’s license or State ID and a piece of mail to verify your address. Persons under the age of 18 will need a parent’s signature. If you live outside of Limestone Township but not in another library district (such as Fossil Ridge or Kankakee), you may need to pay a non-resident fee.

For students aged 5-17 who live in the Herscher school district but not in Limestone Township, Kankakee, or Fossil Ridge library districts, it is now possible to get  a Non-Resident Cards for Kids library card. This will give children who normally wouldn’t have access to a library card an option to utilize the library to its fullest.
Call us for more information at 815-939-1696.

Check out the SOAR Bags at Limestone Township Library District

Have you ever come to the library and seen the canvas bags sitting on top of the book shelves? Have you ever wondered what those bags contained?

These bags are called SOAR Bags and each one has books and activities pertaining to a single subject.

Like what you ask?

Like our Shapes and Colors bag to help younger children learn the names of colors and shapes in fun ways using books and puzzles. We also have a Family bag filled with books and puppets that can be used to tell your own family stories. Or you can keep it seasonal with our Pumpkin bag that has an activity sheet along with various books and toy pumpkins.

If you go down the aisle with our games, you will find our Discovery boxes. Again, each box contains books and items based on a single subject. Here you can find a box filled with items on China that include a Chinese New Year’s dragon puppet. The Simple Machines box features pulleys and other mechanical items that you can build. The Painting box includes a number of different styled brushes along with books about artists.

In this aisle we also have story bags. Each bag contains a single book along with a toy or plush animal to go with the theme of the book. You can find books with math, science, social studies, or literacy subjects. You can also find bags that are about storytelling and holidays.

These Soar bags, Discovery boxes, and Storybags make for fun activities to do with children in pre-school through primary grade school. They could also be used for home schooling lessons as many contain suggested activities sheets.

Please note that you can only check out three of these kits, in any combination, at a time.

Get Help With Homework at Limestone Township Library District

Get Help With Homework at Limestone Township Library District

We are back into the groove of school days and that means projects!

No matter what the subject, our library can help you out.

Try out the e-resources by browsing through World Book Online. This company has four different learning levels so that a high schooler isn’t using the same platform as their grade school counterpart nor is a kindergartener overwhelmed by a higher reading level. You can use World Book Online in the library on the public access computers or at home with your library card.

Another reliable source for information is Consumer Reports. Most of us know this publication as an unbiased source for reviews on any product you can think of. They also have articles on a variety of topics written in the same manner as their reviews. You do need a library card to access this e-resource.

Tumble books contains a plethora of ebooks for children in primary and intermediate grades. Tumble books gives readers the option to read picture books out loud or listen to a recording of the story. It is possible to read graphic novels meant for primary and intermediate school aged children. There are games and songs and videos to watch as well.

We can also help students find source material for papers they need to write, whether it is from our library or another within the Prairiecat consortium. If you need pizazz for a poster display, check out our die-cuts that can be used in the library to create visual interest.

For students aged 5-17 who live in the Herscher school district but not in Limestone Township, Kankakee, or Fossil Ridge library districts, it is possible to get  a Non-Resident Cards for Kids library card. This will give children who normally wouldn’t have access to a library card an option to utilize the library to its fullest.
