Limestone Township Library District Offering Food for Fines

Limestone Township Library District Offering Food for Fines

Sometimes due dates at the library get away from us. We forget when to bring in that book or movie. Or they get hidden under papers or pillows or the dog. It has happened to everyone.

But now you have the opportunity to pay off some of those fines while doing good for others.

From now until Monday, September 30. Limestone Township Library District is accepting canned goods to pay off your fines. Each canned good brought into the library counts as $1.00 towards a Limestone Township Library District fine. You can bring in a maximum of ten canned goods for $10.00 to be taken off of your fine. Please check the expiration dates on the canned good before bringing them in as we cannot accept expired items.

The canned goods donation can only be used towards late fee fines that are from Limestone Township Library District, they cannot be applied to fines from other libraries.

We are donating the canned goods to Harbor House whose mission is to empower individuals, families, and communities through domestic violence programs, advocacy, and prevention.

For more information about the Foods for Fines program, please call the library at 815-939-1696.

Limestone Township Library District Celebrates Shelfie Day

Limestone Township Library District Celebrates Shelfie Day

Wednesday, January 24 is National Shelfie Day. If you are on Facebook or Instagram, you may see many pictures of people with their favorite book against the backdrop of a bookshelf. You might even see pictures of people using the books turned just so to create an image.

Instead of calling it a ‘selfie,’ it’s a ‘shelfie.’

According to National Day Calendar, Library Shelfies offer book stores, libraries, schools, and individuals an opportunity to express their reading preferences through a single photograph.

To celebrate this fun day, Limestone Township Library District is asking patrons and members of the community to take a picture of themselves in the library near their favorite author at their place on our bookshelves. When these pictures are posted, they need to include the hashtag #ltld.

For each picture that has the hashtag, we will put that person’s name in a drawing for a prize that includes a Lucky Tote Bag, a board game, and microwave popcorn for a fun family night. Pictures must be posted by January 24.

We can’t wait to see your shelfies!

If you need more information, call us at 815-939-1696.

Check out our program calendar when you stop in.

Storytime takes place every Wednesday at 10:15 A.M., with Mr. William reading a picture book or two and leading us through a fun craft matching the theme of the book.

Adults can enjoy The Great Gatsby (2013) starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan on Saturday, January 20 at 11:00 A.M. Watch the movie to see how director Baz Luhrmann created a grand spectacle of this Jazz Age story.

Writer's Group will be held on Monday, January 22 at 6:30 P.M. A writer's group is a community of writers who come together to share their work, provide feedback, and support each other in their writing endeavors. It can be a great way to improve your writing skills, get inspiration, and connect with other writers.

Have questions about using your smart phone, Word or Excel programs, or how to get around on the World Wide Web? Come in during Drop-in Tech Help Day from 10:00 A.M. – 12:00 noon on Friday, January 26. When you arrive at the session, be sure to bring your device and any relevant passwords or login information you might need. Help Fill the Mitten Tree at Limestone Township Library District

Help Fill the Mitten Tree at Limestone Township Library District

Every year during the Christmas season, the library is filled with decorated Christmas trees. From our rustic tree in the front lobby to the giant tree in the meeting room, everywhere you look has a decorated tree.

But there is one tree we do not decorate. It sits in the main lobby waiting for decorations. That’s because this is our Mitten Tree.

Every year we fill this tree with mittens and hats and scarves that are donated to the Herscher School District so no one has to go without warm winter wear. We are lucky to have patrons, members of the community, and staff who donate these items every year so we can give them away.

Currently we have a ‘Din Grogu’ hat along with some gloves on the tree but they need company. Help decorate our tree with Mittens, Hats, Gloves, and scarves to help keep kids warm this winter. You can bring in items during library hours and leave them at the tree or give them to staff at the front desk.

Limestone Township Library District Celebrates National Library Card Sign-Up Month

Limestone Township Library District Celebrates National Library Card Sign-Up Month

September is National Library Card Sign Up Month and what better way to celebrate than to sign up for a library card or renew the one you have. Having a library card can open the world up to the card holders. We think of libraries as traditionally being a place that holds only books to be checked out. While that is still true, libraries also hold materials in various forms.

Patrons can check out audio books in CD or playaway formats, movies or TV programs in DVD or BLU Ray formats. You can check out games and educational kits along with some educational equipment.

And did you know that your library card can be used at other libraries in Illinois? If you have a library card from Limestone, it can be used anywhere in our county area and beyond. Not only that, we can order books from libraries within the Prairiecat consortium that includes over 130 libraries. Just because we don’t have something you want, doesn’t mean we cannot get it.

Having a library expands your access to information for lifelong learning and entertainment whether it is reading, watching movies, or playing video games.

The process for getting a card is simple. Stop in with your Driver’s license or State ID and a piece of mail to verify your address. Persons under the age of 18 will need a parent’s signature. If you live outside of Limestone Township but not in another library district (such as Fossil Ridge or Kankakee), you may need to pay a non-resident fee. We also have the Cards for Kids program for children aged 5-17 who live in the Herscher school district but not in Limestone Township.

Have questions? Call us at 815-939-1696.

Check out our program calendar when you stop in.

Adult Book Club meets on Tuesday, September 12 at 6:30 P.M. This month we are reading The Magnificent Lives of Marjorie Post by Alison Pataki. Copies of the book are available at the Front Desk.

Cards for Kids Non-Resident Library Cards Now Available at Limestone Township Library District

Cards for Kids Non-Resident Library Cards Now Available at Limestone Township Library District

Children aged 5-17 who live outside of Limestone Township and within the Herscher School District (C.U.S.D.#2) may qualify for a free Cards for Kids non-resident card from the Limestone Township Library District (LTLD).  Cards for Kids Non-Resident library cards offer the same privileges, services, and resources as those for Limestone Township residents. This will allow students the ability to check out materials for school work and entertainment purposes who would not otherwise have that opportunity.

These free cards are for the child’s use only. Parents who want library privileges would need to purchase a Non-Resident Card at the fiscal year 2023-2024 cost of $142 per year for their library use. This fee can be split into two payments of $71. The non-resident fee reflects the average amount of taxes paid towards the library by residents of Limestone Township.

To sign-up for the Cards for Kids program, parents/guardians need to bring in a photo I.D. (driver’s license, state identification, or passport) and proof of residency (voter’s registration card, utility bill or real estate tax bill.) The student will need to bring their school ID or other proof of school attendance.

We encourage households with more than one child to register for their cards together on the same day, so each account will have the same start date and expiration date. We’d love the opportunity to serve you. If you have any questions, please give us a call at (815) 939-1696.

Check out our program calendar when you stop in.

Storytime takes place every Wednesday at 10:15 A.M. with Mr. William reading a picture book or two and leading us through a fun craft matching the theme of the book.

Family are invited to join us on Saturday, September 2 for Fall Leaf Painting. Kids of all ages can have fun slathering paint on various leaves and painting with them on paper. There is no cost for this program, all supplies will be provided.

The library will be closed on Monday, September 4 in observance of Labor Day. The library will re-open on Tuesday, September 5 at 10:00 A.M.

Come for fun on Thursday, September 7 from 5:30 P.M. – 7:30 P.M. for our Family Video Game Party. We will have on hand Super Smash Bothers Ultimate, Mario Kart and Guitar Hero. Feel free to bring your own Nintendo Switch and joycons! Snacks will be provided.

You don’t have to have a library card to attend our programming. But if you want to check out books, the process for getting a card is simple.
