Limestone Township Library District is Taking a Hike

 

As the leaves start changing in this fall season, it fun to discover what is going on in the natural world around us.

 

The library is taking a hike at the Kankakee River State Park on Saturday, September 27 from 10:00 A.M. till 12:00 noon to do just that! We will start our time with a presentation from Meghan Tharp, CER, about the life cycle of plants and what to look for in the fall before taking a hike through the park.

Participants need to sign up for the program at the library ahead of time. We will meet at the Visitor’s Center at Kankakee River State Park on Saturday, September 27.

For the month of September it is National Library Card Sign Up month. This is a great time to add the smart card to your wallet, allowing you access to our collection and that of over 130 libraries in our consortium. Kids ages 6-12 are invited to have fun with us when we make a layered paper garland featuring the red, orange, brown, and gold colors of fall on Thursday, September 25 at 5:00P.M. All supplies are provided; there is no fee for this program.

Looking for ways to volunteer in your community? The Friends of the Library are meeting on Tuesday, September 30 at 6:30 P.M. in the Dr. Larry Wasser Meeting Room. They are discussing various upcoming events and fundraisers to help support the library. The Friends are always looking for more volunteers to join in and have fun. For every non-perishable food item you bring in during the month of September, $1.00 worth of fines can be removed from your record. You can bring up to ten (10) items equaling $10. This program only applies to fines from Limestone Township Library District. It cannot be applied to fines for lost or damaged material(s).

Since the pandemic, Sourdough Bread has become very popular.

Once you have a starter, fresh home-made bread is always an option. But what else can you make with Sourdough starter?

Join us when Elaine Whitesell returns to the library to talk about Sourdough Baking on Tuesday, September 23 at 6:00 P.M. to answer that question. Whitesell will show and tell the different items you can make with your sour dough starter. And she will bring samples of the various items she has made, allowing us to taste test. Hint, hint - it’s not just bread.

Join us for a Family Movie Day at the library on Saturday, September 20 at 12:00 Noon when we present “The Nut Job.” Popcorn and drinks are included. There is no fee for this program.

 

We are inviting teens to come to the library on Monday, September 22 at 5:00 P.M. for a YA Craft Activity. We are creating garden markers made out of melting beads. Designs are based on Stardew Valley fruits and veggies game images!

Limestone Township Library District Hosting Genealogy Program

Have you ever wondered about your family history? Would you like to know where to start to find information about your ancestors?

Join us on Tuesday, September 16, at 6:30 P.M. for “Starting Your Family Search” with Lee Hollenbeck of the Kankakee Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Hollenbeck is the Kankakee DAR chairman of the Volunteer Genealogist Committee and chair of the Lineage Research committee. It is her job within our local chapter to help people prove their claim to a Revolutionary War Patriot.

In this presentation, Hollenbeck will explain the information needed and give us the tools to start your search for your family tree. Every story is different, but they are exciting to the ones searching for answers.
