Have you ever wondered about your family history? Would you like to know where to start to find information about your ancestors?

Join us on Tuesday, September 16, at 6:30 P.M. for “Starting Your Family Search” with Lee Hollenbeck of the Kankakee Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Hollenbeck is the Kankakee DAR chairman of the Volunteer Genealogist Committee and chair of the Lineage Research committee. It is her job within our local chapter to help people prove their claim to a Revolutionary War Patriot.

In this presentation, Hollenbeck will explain the information needed and give us the tools to start your search for your family tree. Every story is different, but they are exciting to the ones searching for answers.

Join us for a Family Movie Day at the library on Saturday, September 20 at 12:00 Noon when we present “The Nut Job.” Popcorn and drinks are included. There is no fee for this program.

 

We are inviting teens to come to the library on Monday, September 22 at 5:00 P.M. for a YA Craft Activity. We are making garden markers made out of melting beads. Designs based on Stardew Valley fruits and veggies!

 

Join Elaine Whitesell on Tuesday, September 23 at 6:30 P.M. when she returns to demonstrate the various items you can make with Sourdough. Hint, hint – it’s not just a loaf of bread. Snacks provided.

 

We are taking a hike at the Kankakee River State Park on Saturday, September 27 from 10:00 A.M. till 12:00 noon! We will start our time with a presentation from Meghan Tharp, CER, about the life cycle of plants and what to look for in the fall before taking a hike through the park. Sign up for the program at the library ahead of time. We will meet at the Visitor’s Center at Kankakee River State Park on September 27.

 

For the month of September, the library is offering a Food For Fines program. For every non-perishable food item you bring in during the month of September, $1.00 worth of fines can be removed from your record. You can bring up to ten (10) items equaling $10. This program only applies to fines from Limestone Township Library District. It cannot be applied to fines for lost or damaged material(s).

Limestone Township Library District Celebrates Summer Reading

 

We are nearing the mid-point of Summer Reading: Where Wild Wonders Await!

And slowly we are seeing Reading Logs being turned into the Front Desk. Remember that for every twenty minutes you spend reading and mark on your log sheet, you will receive a ticket to place in our raffle prize baskets.

But wait, there’s more.

Kids who are 15 years old and younger who have turned in a reading log with 300 minutes marked out will receive a coupon for a FREE 8” pizza from Monical’s. You must turn in your completed log sheet to receive your coupon. The coupon is limited to one per child.

If you haven’t signed up for summer reading yet, there is still time to do so. Just stop in the library to fill out the super simple registration form and receive your information folder complete with program calendar and two reading log sheets to start you off on your summer reading adventure.

On Wednesday, July 2 at 10:30 A.M., Master Naturalist and Chicago Sun-Times Outdoor columnist Dale Bowman presents on Our Local Eco-System. Adults are invited and encouraged to bring friends. Light refreshments will be served. Registration is required.

Using bits of paper, the Pre-K crowd can have fun making a Mosaic Gecko during our Pre-K Craft Time on Thursday, July 3 at 3:00 P.M. There is no fee for this program, all supplies are included.

Join us for a rejuvenating session of Yoga with Colleen on Thursday, July 3 at 6:00 P.M.! Whether you're a seasoned yogi or just starting your journey, this class is the perfect way to unwind, stretch, and connect with your inner self.

Please be aware that the library will be closed on Friday, July 4 in observance of Independence Day. The library will re-open on Saturday, July 5 at 10:00 A.M.

We invite kids aged 12-18 to finish off reptile week with us on a Movie Day on Saturday, July 5 at 12:00 P.M. We are watching “Godzilla” (2014) as the big guy once more destroys cities but turns out to be a hero. Snacks will be served.

Kids aged 6 through 12 are invited to have fun on Monday, July 8 at 1:00 P.M. when we take paper plates and make them into chickens. All supplies provided, and there is no fee for this program.

It’s time for an Adult Craft Night on July 6 at 6:00 P.M. Join us as we paint wooden bird figures. There is no fee for this program, all supplies are included.

Join us on Tuesday, July 8 from 1:00 P.M. till 3:00 P.M. for a fun creative art session as we make a bird mobile. This YA Activity time is for Ya and Teen Youth (ages 12-18).

Families will want to join us at Limestone Park on Tuesday, July 8 at 4:00 P.M. for a fun hike! This takes place at Limestone Park at 5813 W 1000 N in Limestone Township. Join us for our Adult Book Club on Tuesday, July 8 at 6:30 PM! This month, we’ll dive into the historic fiction of "Beyond that, The Sea” by Laura Spence-Ash. Come into the library during the time we are open for a Bird Feather Scavenger Hunt. Feathers will be scattered around the library for our patrons ages 6-12 to find. Can you catch them all?

Looking for a new adventure? Check out Explore More Illinois to find discounts at a variety of attractions across Central and Northern Illinois.

Planning a visit to a country that doesn’t speak English? Learn that country’s language with Mango Languages.

You will need a library card and a pin number to access these apps. The Northern Illinois Anglers Association is coming to the library to present on local sustainable fishing practices on Wednesday, June 18 from 10:30 A.M. till 12:00 Noon. Come and learn how to be a better steward of our fishing grounds.

Our First Take-and-Make for the Summer! Paper Roll Crab! All of the parts are in the kit, but you need to provide the glue and the manpower to make our parts look like a crab! Available starting Wednesday, June 18 while supplies last!

Start off by coming to the library for our fun programs.

On Thursday, May 29 there will be a Youth crafting session for kids aged 7-12 as we create fairy windmills.  Don't miss out on this opportunity to unleash your creativity and make something special.

Adults can have fun as well at the Poet’s Cup on Friday, May 30 starting at 10:30. Listen to some jazz and hear poetry read out loud while sipping on some coffee. It's a perfect opportunity to indulge in the soothing atmosphere of creativity and connection.

Parents are looking for activities for their children and can look to the library to be a part of their summer fun.

We are very excited to announce this year’s Summer Reading Program – Where Wild Wonders Await!

We will be exploring different aspects of the outside world every week with fun crafts, presentations, activities, and opportunities to win raffle baskets. This year, participants who read for a total of 100 minutes will be eligible for the Summer Reading Closing Event on Friday, July 19.

Get Crafty at Limestone Township Library District

 

One of the great things about doing crafts with a group of people is that you’re in with a group of people.

You can see what other people are working on, they can see what you are working on. And when someone uses a different technique, then others can ask for an impromptu demonstration.

This is what happens in our Crochet & Knitting Club as well as our Scrapbook/Junk Journal Group. People who are newbies or long-time crafters in these areas get together to work on their projects. Techniques are shared as well as tidbits of where to buy items or some of the best local eateries.

It is a great time to get a project closer to completion and to socialize with others in your hobby interest.

April means tax season. Many of us are working to get all those important papers together in order to file our taxes by April 15.

Limestone Township Library District has limited amounts of State and Federal 1040 tax forms on the carousel in the lobby. If you need other specific forms, we can print them out for you at a cost of .25₡ per sheet for a black and white copy.

We are also celebrating Smart Money Month with a special guest. Join us for Storytime on Thursday, April 10th at 10:30 AM as Joe McNicholas of the Illinois State Treasury Office will share with our younger patrons stories about making smart money moves appropriate for their age! Don't miss this delightful opportunity for learning and fun!

The Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale starts on Friday, March 28 during library hours. You will find a large selection of fiction and non-fiction books for all ages. The sale runs through April 12.

 It’s time for Adult Craft Night on Monday, April 14th at 6:00 PM, where we'll be painting plant pots! It's a great opportunity to unleash your creativity, enjoy some company, and take home a personalized pot for your plants. All supplies will be provided; just bring your artistic spirit!

After the story, we’ll transition into a fun and hands-on craft, creating our very own paper plate umbrellas! Grab your supplies and get ready for a day filled with storytelling and artistic fun. Stop in on Friday, April 18 to pick up our latest Take-and-Make kit of a Paper-Strip Bunny. Supplies are limited, come in and get your kit before they are all gone.
